The first form of Roulette was made in 18th century France. A man called Blaise Pascal came up with a primitive form of the game in the 17th century when actually trying to devise a perpetual motion machine.

The roulette wheel is thought to be a mixture of English wheel games called Roly Poly, Ace of Hearts, Reiner as well as Italian board games called Hoca and Biribi.

Records tell us that the game of Roulette has been played as it is now, since around 1800 in Paris. The single zero wheel was introduced to the wheel in 1843 to compete against the other casinos who offered the traditional wheel with both the single and double zero house pockets. The house pockets were where the ball dropped into so you identify what number had come up. The single zero wheel became the best and most popular casino game during the 1860’s when the game became settled in Monte Carlo. It was here that the Elite of Europe came to gamble on a regular basis. The double zero wheel stayed the most popular in the USA.

In the 1800’s the game of roulette spread all across the USA and Europe becoming the most popular game being played in casinos. The legend of roulette says that you must bargain with the devil to find the secret of roulette. Maybe this is because the sum of all the numbers on the roulette wheel – 1 to 36 – comes to 666 – the number of the beast!

In the 1970s the casino began to flourish across the world. Now there are hundreds and hundreds of casinos world wide and that is not even taking into account online casinos. The double zero wheel is found in the U.S.A., South America, and the Caribbean, while the single zero wheel is predominant elsewhere.

The cloth covering with the betting areas on a roulette table is known as a layout. The layout is either single zero or double zero. The French style layout is a single zero, and the American style layout is usually a double zero. The American style roulette table with a wheel at one end is now used in most casinos. The French style table with a wheel in the centre and a layout on either side is rarely found outside of Monte Carlo.
