The numbers are arranged slightly different on both but the main difference is that the American wheel has two zero slots instead of one. This small difference has a huge affect on the odds of you winning – the house edge (the advantage the casino has) is about 5.26% on an American wheel on most bets – but the European edge is smaller – 2.7% and even lower in some cases.
So if you have any choice in the matter always play on a European wheel where the odds are much better.
If you have never played roulette before it’s best to watch the action for a little while – don’t sit down until you’re ready to play. Even if the table is empty the seats are reserved for people playing not watching.
There are usually different limits on each tables and minimum wagers – only play with ones you are comfortable with. The maximum wagers may be different on inside bets (those on specific numbers) than outside bets (those bets on the outside of the grid like odd/even – red/black).
Most of the bets are fairly explanatory but one other thing to remember is that if you win the croupier will generally push your winnings towards you but leave the original bet on the table – if you do nothing you’ll repeat the bet – remove it if you don’t want to do this.
