MGM and Mirage have favorable rules for roulette players at $25 minimum bets. Wynn and Bellagio may sometimes drop down to the $50 minimums but are usually $100 with similar rules. These 2 can also be recommended if the bankroll is large enough. The maximum even money bets are $20, 000 for these casinos except for the $10,000 limit at the MGM.
Roulette in Vegas varies from casino to casino based on the number of zeros on the wheels and how much of a bet is taken by the casino if the house 0 or 00 comes up. A wheel with only a 0 is called a single zero roulette wheel while a wheel with 36 numbers plus a 0 and a 00 is called a double zero wheel.
In American style roulette, the casino takes all your bet if you have wagered on a single number or an even money bet. There are 3 even money wagers: red or black, even or odd, high or low (1 to 18 or 19 to 36). If a spin lands on the red 36, those bettor with either a red, even or high bet will win.
Under European rules used at the MGM, Mirage, Wynn and Bellagio when the single 0 comes up, they take half of the even money bets. This changes the odds considerably. Below are the casino advantages against the players for the different games:
American style double zero wheels (standard in Vegas): 5.26%
American style single zero: 2.70%
European style single zero: 1.35%
There are about 35 spins per hour which makes roulette slower than average for tables games. At only a 1.35% disadvantage the average hourly loss is one of the better games for the player but completely void of advantage play (possible long term profit) against the house. It is purely a game of luck.
Unfortunately, for low rollers the minimum bet size is too high. There are no single zero low limit games with the favorable European rules and even 2.70% for a standard American single zero game is at the high end of low casino advantage games.
There are no advantage plays at Roulette that can be recommended. Clocking a wheel is observing many trials for bias. Although Joseph Jaggers broke the bank at Monte Carlo in 1873 when he and his 5 assistants found a biased wheel, today’s casinos maintain their equipment better and have introduced high scatter wheels (lower profile partitions) that increase randomness.
Ballistics is using either computer or trained human eye observations to narrow down numbers to a section of the wheel such as a quadrant. This uses inputs such as the speed of the wheel, ball, how the dealers drop the ball, etc. Smuggling a ballistics computer to the table is not easy as well as not allowed and visual ballistics is probably beyond most people’s ability.
Finally, betting systems are touted for any game of chance but seem to be more popularly associated with roulette. Unfortunately, every spin in roulette is independent of all previous spins. A streak of black numbers does not signify that a red number has to appear and even if it eventually does, a double up type of bettor may run into the betting limits quickly.
In the end, roulette is a game of chance. If you look hard enough, you can find the better games and reduce your expected percentage losses. Chasing an end to a streak is not a way to do so, especially with bet limits.
